How to Fix a Mirror

cover- tutorial for DIY to fix a mirror

So a couple days ago I tackled a project that has been on my to-do list since we moved into our home (and I'd really not like to mention how long that's been).  It was one of those things that got shoved aside and forgotten.  Oh, I'd occasionally think about it and say to myself, "I've got to fix that thing," but it took me quite a long time before it came to fruition.  Obviously it was not very high on my priority list.

In any case, the story goes that we had a mirror hanging in our old home that we brought to the new one, but when it was being moved, it must have gotten dropped somehow.  The glass pane came loose from the frame and popped out at the top and sides, making it unusable.

In which I find lots of goodies, including the gorgeous Vera Wang dress

Sometimes I go thrifting and don't find anything that strikes my fancy.  Other times I go and come home with a huge bagful of great things.

This past week I visited one of the local Goodwill stores and walked out with more items than I can comment on in one post.  Therefore, I'm going to mention a few items today and share the rest later.

The first things to share are an A-line H & M wool skirt and a pretty cardigan with some great lace detailing on the back.  I paired them with a lacy pink tank and a scarf that I thifted ages ago to get a romantically-inspired outfit.   It was perfect for school.  And why do I look so tired in these pics?  Yup, cause they were taken after a school day and I was exhausted.

Night at the Museum

Cheap Date night
One thing that I love about living near a big city is that there's always something going on.  Festivals, concerts, parades, eateries, cool shopping districts- there is no lack of things to do in the Richmond area.

Even for those that don't live by a major metro area, there are certainly exciting things on the community calendar (albeit perhaps less frequently than in a large city).  I encourage you to take a look and see what is available, because today's cheap date night idea is all about finding those local events that are not only fun, but also inexpensive or free.

Recently, my husband and I have been taking advantage of the art museum's free Friday night celebrations.  VMFA After Dark is a weekly event hosted by the Virginia Museum of Fine Art.  They offer free tours, wine tastings, tango dancing, and more.  Our group of friends has found that getting a little dressed up and heading to town for a little culture, wine, and good company is a great way to unwind after a week of work.

Liebster Award!

One Red Shoe blog

I came home from work earlier this week to find a wonderful surprise.  Helen @ Blue Eyed Beauty Blog had nominated me for the Liebster Award!  As I'm still fairly new to the blogging world, it is so nice to get a little nod of recognition- a little "hey, I appreciate you!"- because it's nice to know that what I have to share is valued (I'm sure many new bloggers feel this way).  Helen, thanks so much.  I've spent lots of time at your blog and really appreciate the nod from a blogger I really respect. :)  And how much fun is this?  If you've never heard of Liebster, read the rules.  And then enjoy the fun facts and please take a little visit to the great blogs I've nominated (and be sure to follow them if you like what you see).

Now on to the fun!

Facts of the Liebster Award:
The Liebster Award's origins are pretty much a mystery. Bloggers nominate other bloggers that have 200 or fewer followers. It's basically a "Hey, that's a sweet little blog you've got there. Here's an award!" You can't just accept the award. You have to play by the (ever changing) rules and pay it forward. Then you can put the award on your blog for all to see.

The Rules:
1. List 11 facts about yourself.
2. Answer the 11 questions given to you.
3. Create 11 new questions for the bloggers you nominate for the award.
4. Choose 11 bloggers with 200 or fewer followers to nominate.
5. Go to each bloggers page and let them know about the award.
6. Thank the person who nominated you and link back to their blog.

11 Random Facts About Myself:
1. I have two cats that I love very much.  One of them is literally three times heavier than the other.  And no, there's no easy way to fix this crazy poor distribution of weight.  One cat is a glutton; the other is bulimic.  Meal times are a juggling act here.
2. When I turned seven I had a birthday party on my back patio. My mom stuck my father's tomato stakes into the ground around the patio and tied balloons to them as part of the decorations.  They were these really cool balloons that were swirled rainbow colors like oil on water.  That was the best birthday of my childhood.  I don't remember it all, but I remember the balloons and the fact that I felt pretty in my party dress.  And I knew my mom had tried really hard to make the day terrific for me; I felt uniquely special.
3. I put my pants on left leg first.  True story.
4. When I was in high school I was very involved in the performing arts.  Band, choir, theatre, I loved it all and just wanted to go to some magnet school for the arts.  I loved the arts, and literature, and Spanish.  I hated social studies.  In fact, I took the fewest number of classes I could get by with and still graduate.  Hated. It.  And the irony?  I'm now a history teacher.
5. When I look at my paternal grandmother's pictures I see myself in her face and body.  This is wonderful because my grandmother is a wonderful woman (and it's sort of like looking into the future).
6. I'm slowly turning into a weird sort of grammar freak as I get older.  In fact, I felt the need to correct two mistakes in the above two "facts" and "rules" sections before I could publish it.  The both amusing and annoying thing is that people really find it annoying, so I generally just cringe in silence when I read something (or hear something) that's obviously incorrect (like the misuse of their, there, and they're).
7. I am 100% and completely in love with Doctor Who.  If the TARDIS ever lands in my yard, I am fully abandoning my responsibilities to travel with the Doctor.
8. I smell books.  They transport me to the past.  I knew that my husband was a keeper when I mentioned that a particular book "smelled like my 7th grade science textbook" and he didn't run away.
9. When I listen to the radio, I listen to classic rock and adult contemporary stations.  When I'm choosing the music at home, I tend to choose things like Loreena McKennitt, Blackmore's Night, Florence + the Machine, or Celtic Woman.
10. My washer and dryer are in my garage.  So is my chest freezer.  So are my cat's litter boxes.  And my husband's Harley.
11. I really, really, really dislike intolerance and discrimination of others.  I believe that I'm generally a compassionate and accepting person and I don't understand hateful or judgmental people.

11 Questions From Helen:
1. What word do you most hate to spell?
Separate.  I misspelled that word for the first 20 or so years of my life, and then I figured out that there were two a's in there, not three e's.  Ever since then, I have to say the word slowly in my head while spelling it: sep-ar-ate.  Otherwise I won't spell it right.  That gets very annoying after more than a decade.
2. Do you stay up late to write blog posts?
Too often.  My job has me up by 5:30, so I should really be in bed by 10:30.  I get caught in the "just one more edit" or "just one more picture" cycle, and then I'm toast.
3. How many children do you have? or how many children do you want?
I have one son, who is such a cool and amazing person.  My husband and I love having just him and he loves being an only child.  It works well for all of us!
4. Where did you meet your husband/fiance/boyfriend?
(This one always raises eyebrows.) Jason and I met because we worked for the same mobile disc jockey company- we were DJs together.  The first time I saw him he was walking on his hands across a dance floor.
5. Does your family know about your blog? or is it a "secret"?
They know and they are very sweet and supportive.
6. Does your blog offer at least three different ways to follow you? For example I (Blue Eyed Beauty Blog or Exercise Encouragement Group Blog) offer the options to follow via emailfacebook, or bloglovin...and more.)
I can be followed by email, bloglovin', feed posts, and with Facebook.
7. Are you associate with a group of bloggers? If so, which one(s)?
I've gotten to know a number of bloggers through my contributions to the refashion co-op blog, but that's about it for now.
8. What are you most looking forward to this New Year?
I'm planning on getting Lasik this year.  That's going to be one of the most amazing things to happen to me this year.
9. Which one do you prefer: flats or heels? Why?
Heels.  They make me look taller, and I like the way they look better.  Also, sometimes I hear the "clack, clack" and it reminds me of one of my favorite actresses, Anne Hathaway, in the movie The Devil Wears Prada when she's describing the "clackers" at work.  And then I smile.
10. Which do you like best: white chocolate, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or all three?
I've rarely run across chocolate I don't like.  However, dark chocolate is my absolute favorite.  I love trying chocolate bars with interesting combinations, such as chocolate bars with salt, cinnamon, or fruits in them.
11. What are the top three blogs you read most often but have more than 200+ followers (aka you can't nominate them for this award but you'd still love to give them a shout out!).
Maybe Matilda
Of Dreams and Seams
Recycled Fashion

Swingy Ruffle Skirt Tutorial

I don't know how many of you re-fashioners out there do this, but sometimes my mind won't turn off at night.  At times like that, my thoughts wander into the next room and through my textiles stacks.  Occasionally my mind comes up with something good.  That is what happened last week, while I was still on vacation and my brain needed something to ponder.

Thrifty Gift Card Shopping at the Chester Drawers

One Red Shoe blog cover

Gift certificates and gift cards are definitely a safe bet if you're looking to give a thrifty person a gift.  In fact, I'm pretty sure I already admitted in this blog about my hoarding problem when it comes to them (see #1 in this post).  But my sister-in-law, Angela, found a way around my hoarding tendencies by getting me a gift certificate to one of my favorite local consignment shops.

She actually earned a whole bunch of awesome points by getting each person in my family a gift certificate to a local store they love.  She found out that I love the Chester Drawers (I'm guessing it's because she read my blog post here), and went through the trouble of contacting them and having them send a gift certificate all the way to Michigan so that she could package it up with the family's gift and send it back down via USPS.  She pretty much rocks that way.
